Marky's Gourmet: Caviar, Cheese and Truffles on 79th Street Since 1983

A short walk west of Shoe Gallery on 79th Street, Marky's Gourmet has been feeding Miami's fancy side since 1983. Caviar, smoked salmon, foie gras, truffles, cheese, wine: if it belongs on a special-occasion table, this is the kind of spot where you'll find it, plus a few things you didn't know you needed.

First Impressions & Vibe

Walk in and it feels like an old-world specialty shop. Tall carved wood cabinets line the walls, with arched shelves labeled by category: Burgundy, Rosé, Sweets, Mushrooms, Foie Gras, Vinegar, Oil and Truffles. Wine cases stack up in the aisles and a rolling ladder reaches the top shelves. It's a place made for browsing slow, so give yourself a minute. The Infatuation once summed it up as a little market where you can stock up on some very fancy things, and the shelves back that up.

The People Behind It

Miami New Times reported that Mark Zaslavsky and Mark Gelman opened a caviar business on Northeast 79th Street in the early 1980s. Marky's says the store opened in 1983 to fill a gap in South Florida's gourmet food market, starting with caviar and smoked salmon before growing into a full lineup of fine foods. For over four decades, Marky's says, it has stayed committed to sourcing only the finest products.

That small Miami store grew into Marky's Caviar, which now has shops and restaurants in New York, and Marky's says many of its caviars come from its own Sturgeon Aquafarms. Pretty wild for a business that started a few blocks from our door.

What to Shop

Start with the caviar, since that's how this whole thing began. Marky's calls itself a one-stop shop for gourmet delicacies at a range of price points, so you don't need a huge occasion to treat yourself. From there, work the room:

  • Caviar and smoked salmon
  • Foie gras and fresh truffles
  • Cheeses
  • Premium seafood and meats
  • Olive oils, vinegars and pastas
  • Wines and champagnes

The neighborhood has known about this place for a long time. Miami New Times gave Marky's its Best Caviar nod in 2004 and a Best Cheese award in 2007, and Marky's says it has also been voted the #1 Gourmet Store in Miami by Miami New Times. Pro tip: building a holiday spread or shopping for the person who has everything? This is your stop.
