The Surfrider Foundation Miami chapter hosted an epic community event at Shoe Gallery on Thursday, May 9th, for the Florida premiere of the documentary A New Wave by Sandra Winther. The film celebrates the life of Michael "Freestyle" February and highlights modern radical surfing, including powerful visuals of female surfers and local cinematographers’ behind-the-lens talent.

Sustainable by Design

The Surfrider team didn’t just bring entertainment — they brought innovation. When their inflatable screen malfunctioned, they painted a screen directly on Shoe Gallery’s exterior wall. That creative move saved the night and left behind a permanent fixture for future events, truly embodying the Surfrider spirit of adapting and innovating sustainably.

Eco-Friendly Touches

All food, drinks, and utensils were eco-conscious. Guests received stainless steel Surfrider pint cups for drinks and refills, reinforcing the night’s message of reducing waste and protecting our oceans.

Live Art, Local Flavor

Artist Nico Suavalicious added a visual burst to the evening with a stunning live mural painting on site, captivating guests and transforming Shoe Gallery’s façade into a floral masterpiece. The vibe was elevated further with a pop-up market by Iggy Pazz, offering handcrafted surf-inspired goods.

Music, Raffles, and Community

The parking lot turned full-on festival with DJ sets by Same Gang Safe and Luncheonbaby, while Spam Allstars powered the sound system. Raffle prizes from Vans and Oakley helped raise funds for Surfrider’s local campaigns. The community came out in full force — many first-time visitors discovered SG as a new favorite local spot.

Film Screening Highlight

As the sun set, the crowd settled in for the main feature. The screening of A New Wave drew in a large, captivated audience, making the message of the documentary — the blend of freedom, culture, and surfing — even more impactful.

Final Thoughts

Surfrider Movie Night at SG was more than just a screening — it was a celebration of advocacy, sustainability, and cultural exchange. It reminded us that creative thinking, shared values, and community roots are what drive real change — and make for a perfect Miami night under the stars.
